Talk to the big achievers & that ease zone at times expands to perhaps ten to twelve schools - “elites,” who previous year stunned us college advisors just by edging down in “lower than about 10%” admit rate. With Stanford turning thousands of valedictorians yearly and the big state schools getting tens of hundreds of apps every year, just applying to handful of schools, which everybody else is applying…is not win-win plan.

So here is a big, heartening number - there are over 1500 four year, regionally credited, residentially based, bachelor degree colleges & universities in the country. Wrapped inside lots of of those 1500 plus “traditional” scholar experiences, are stunning gems recognized as “honors experiences, and ” where small, choosy group of students will get to work with the distinguished faculty in specialized surroundings & enjoy all top sources of the college. Thanks to thousands of honors experiences all over the country, even most spirited student can cast net across lots of attractive schools & land an exceptional undergraduate education.

The honors experiences also come in various fantastic set-ups. First up are the honors colleges. Keep in mind that the universities are groups of colleges. At several schools, there is distinct honors college who has its own admissions & financial help process, prospectus, & lots more. Next are honors programs (at times referred as “scholars” courses) that can be series of particular courses, parts or major track, which is division of many academic aids at college. Finally, the honors semesters are focused experiences, frequently associated with the internships and travel. The colleges may as well have their mix-and-match adaptations of honors experience.

If you are academically aggravated student who likes stretching mind & spirit, here are few reasons why one school with honors experience fits on your college list.

Ultimate academic experience. Honors experience on any of the campus generally presents very close contact with the most important faculty members, most challenging routes, and cream of student crop.

Devoted facilities. Several honors colleges got their personal residential housing for the students. At minimum, the honors programs normally present special lounges, personal computer labs and other facilities for the honors students.

Similar price, good education. When you get accept in honors experience, you normally pay similar tuition, fees & residential bills as some other students on the campus - however you get “upgraded seat.” A few programs & colleges charge extra fees for extra sources you may access, however they have unique scholarships that will help to pay for those.

Best of worlds. Love idea of big state school knowledge? Even on largest campus, the honors experience will give you lots of benefits of smaller, and private college. A honors experience is like no other when it comes to going to class.

A hope of self-actualization. Not like some very high school classes, the college honors experiences are not about doubling the workload; they are radically expanding the worldview. You may look forward to the leadership grooming, specialized internships, service learning, field trips, advanced undergraduate research, recreational events, personal advisors, trips abroad and lots more.

Every other child has to struggle to get the right math answers. Math is difficult for most children. However, there are proven ways to help children overcome difficulties in math.

Prepare yourself early on. Try to start math learning as early as possible. Your child may be a math wiz, he just might be one of the many whose waterloo is math, or he may be somewhere in between. The earlier you know how he fares in math, the easier it will be for you. Kids good in math may only need encouraging and regular practice. On the other hand, those who are struggling will need more than that.

Maintain a positive attitude about math. Many parents hate math. If you breed this contempt against the subject, it is very likely that your child will harbor the same attitude. Try to avoid expressing this by saying how you have always flunked in math, or you have never really liked it. Instead, encourage your child to work hard and be persistent when he encounters difficult math problems. Appreciate his efforts, whether or not he get the right math answers as expected. Share his excitement when he solves a challenging problem or finally understands a math concept.

Make math an interesting, everyday routine. It is important to let your child understand the importance of math, especially in their everyday life. Point out situations where he would be likely to use math. You can start with counting plates, to measuring ingredients to making purchases at the grocery. Try to play educational games and puzzles which involve the use of math. Better yet, try to do math problems and find the answers together just for fun.

Teach him to work independently. It is very important for your child to learn to work independently especially in math. If your child does not have the genes that math wizards do, diligence will be his best shot. He should learn to persevere on his own. This will prepare him for time-consuming and challenging math problems he will surely encounter.

Instill the right mathematical reasoning. Getting at the right math answers involve a sequence of steps. If your child knows these steps by heart, there is no reason not to arrive at the right answer. The steps involve:

Knowing what information is given.

Determining what information is being asked.

Thinking of a way to get the information being asked from what is given.

Translating the problem into a mathematical equation.

Solving then checking if the answer makes sense.

It is important that you instill the virtue of reasoning and understanding more than memorizing. You should encourage him to give his own explanation of the problem. Ask him what his thoughts are on how to solve. Listen well, and comment whether or not it makes sense. Make every problem he encounters an opportunity for your child to learn something new.

Lastly, never forget to practice. As mentioned before, diligence is a very important key that will help your child breeze through each problem with the right math answers.

If you are a parent, free math worksheets are heaven sent! They allow you to help your kids practice their math without too much effort on your part.

If you closely follow up on your child’s education, preparing your child for a math test can be tough. However, this has recently become easier through free math worksheets accessible online.

Gone are those nerve-racking days when you would make your own worksheets come final exams. Nor would you go through erasing answers and solutions from their workbook and have them do it over “for review purposes”. No more reluctance when you ask your child to do the same problems over.

For most parents, teaching kids math at home can be a chore. Who would want to tutor an unwilling student some topic which you barely remember at all? Top that with the extreme patience needing in teaching math, it is very easy to take your hands off. However, with the advent of free math worksheets, there is no reason not to learn math at home.

There are free math worksheets for practically any math subject. Worksheets can range from plain arithmetic operations, decimals, fractions, geometry, even algebra. Many websites sponsor free worksheets that you can download and print in just a few clicks.

Many websites host these math worksheet sets. They are usually listed by type, and are organized by subject. Thus, whether you have a pre-schooler or a high school student, there is something you can give your child to practice on.

What is good about math worksheets is that they are pleasant and attractive. Most of them include graphics which are enticing to look at. Doing math at home should not be a chore, but a positive experience both for you and your child. Math worksheets can create this atmosphere, most especially if your child is tired of the monotony and boredom that is common in school setting.

Using free math printable worksheets

Most free worksheets have already been set up for printing as easy as 1-2-3. They are provided free so there is no need for you to provide credit card details. There are links which lead you to the worksheet page itself. There is a print function associated, so your math worksheet will be ready in a few clicks. Some sites have worksheets in certain formats, so you might have to make sure you have the necessary software to view them.

What is even better about these worksheets is that most sites provide them with answers, even with detailed solutions. This will save you time and allow you to do your chores as your child answers his.

Free math worksheets are indeed heaven sent for those who would like their child to succeed in math. Not all of us are born with ideal genes for mathematics. However, the discipline that can be developed through constant practice will provide your children with just as much success.

Be part of your child’s learning experience through free math worksheets.

Not everyone has been given great abilities in math. This is a truth of life that can never be denied. Math is tough for most people, so you are definitely not alone. If you are one of those who are not as gifted, this is not the end of the line for you. In fact, there are strategies to help you overcome every math problem you encounter.

Here is a simple and easy to follow strategy you can use to breeze through difficult math problems.

Understand the problem carefully. The key to understanding is ready very carefully. Make sure that you understand the problem being presented, and you understand it correctly. You should point out the information that you are given, and what is being asked. If a picture can be drawn, make one and clearly label all information. Illustrations are usually very helpful, so make it a part of your analysis phase.

Make a plan.

Focus on what is being asked in the problem. Try to ask yourself: what information will you need to come up with the answer? Afterwards, look at the information given. Try to see how every information can be used to solve the problem. Now if you are stuck and you see no logical connection between the information given to the solution, it probably means the math problem is more complicated than usual. Look at the information again and get whatever you can find from it. You will usually find another useful piece of information that can be subsequently used to solve the problem.

Write out the equations.

Now that you have a plan, you have to express your plan mathematically. This will involve:

Assigning some variable name to the unknowns. You can always use x, or d for distance, t for time, and so on. What you want is to have the least number of unknowns. So, if two quantities are given to be related, relate them so that both are expressed in just one variable. So, if John is twice as old as Luke, let x stand for Luke’s age, and 2x for John’s.

Translating the English into the Math. Remember that in math, English phrases have corresponding mathematical meanings. If you familiarize yourself with as many of them through constant practice, you will know them by heart in no time.

Solve the problem.

Now that you have the equations, carry out your plan and solve for what is asked. Remember that your solution must be what the problem is asking for.

Don’t forget to check.

By now you think you have already answered the math problem. But you just might not have. Check your answer. Is it reasonable enough? Do the units correspond? Does your answer even make sense? If you feel there is something off, trace back and see whether you have made a mistake in your calculation.

Solving math problems can be overwhelming. However, if you follow the right strategy, you will get a hang of it. In time, you will realize that in every math problem, there indeed is a solution waiting to be discovered.

John runs a site called MathTrench.com, which offers thousands of solved math problems

If you struggle at solving algebra word problems, you are not alone. Algebra is undoubtedly one of the difficult branches in math. However, there is a way to make algebra more manageable. Without much ado, here are effective tips that can help you conquer this rather difficult subject.

Read the problem very carefully. Better yet, understand the problem thoroughly. Know what information you are given and which you need to solve for.

Recognize the type of word problem. You should know that there are common types of algebra word problems. Your problem might be about age, consecutive integers, coins, interest, fraction, mixture, distance, number sequence, ratio and proportion, mixture, interest, or work problems. For each type of category, you will find a solution pattern which you can employ for different situations of the same type.

Know the language and translate the word into an equation. Doing this involves two steps:

1. Assigning names to variables. Assign your unknowns their respective variables; x is very commonly used. You should also use variable which signify what it represents: t for time, d for distance, r for rate, etc.

2. Coming up with an algebraic expression. Algebra is a mathematical language. Thus, it has a set of grammar which you can get acquainted with in time. What is crucial in translating algebra word problems into equations is recognizing key words and phrases. Keywords in the word problem will connote specific operations. For example, “sum of”, “more/greater/older than”, “consecutive,” and so on translates to addition operation, while “difference”, “diminished/decreased by”, “fewer/less/younger than” will denote subtraction. Words such as “product”, “doubled/tripled”, “twice/thrice”, “multiplied by” and “of” signify multiplication. Lastly, “quotient”, “divided by/into”, “quotient”, “in” or “per” translates to a division operation. Familiarizing yourself with these terms will help you easily convert the word problem into a working algebraic expression. Getting the hang of this through practice will already get you halfway to your solution.

Solve the equation. Once you have correctly translated the problem into an algebraic equation, you then find the values of the variable. This will involve further steps:

1. Simplify the equation. This is the first step in solving an algebra equation. You can employ methods such as combining like terms, dividing/multiplying terms, removing brackets, cross multiplication, and so on.

2. Isolate the variable. As you may known, you need to isolate the unknown variable to only one side of the equation before moving forward. This is relatively easy to do, especially for equations in one unknown.

3. Do the necessary operations. This may involve addition, opposite-coefficient, substitution and so on. This is where your basic algebra concepts should come in. If you have two unknowns, this is where the quadratic formula will take its course.

Check your answer. Never neglect this part. Read the algebra word problem again to see whether your final answer makes sense. Go through your operations one more time and see if you have done everything correctly.

Practice, practice, practice. The more you practice, the faster you realize how algebra word problems are not that tough after all.

John runs a site called MathTrench.com, which offers thousands of solved math problems

It is very easy to give up and say: I just can’t do math word problems. But the truth is, math word problems will always be part of your education. Before you go on and quit, you should know how math actually has significance in your daily life. When you read math word problems, do not immediately push it aside and declare “It has nothing to do with me!”

In fact, as you probably know, math word problems are integral in our mundane life, we just don’t realize it. Think about going shopping or baking. You do not just do calculation off the top of your head, you are carrying out an actual math word problem without pen and paper! So, don’t give up on math problems just yet. There is more in store for you.

So, how do you survive math word problems?

Converting into an equation is the key!

The key to solving any math word problem is to correctly convert the word statement into an mathematical equation. Unfortunately, this is a giant stumbling block for most students. Know that math has its own language. You probably know this already, your variable x stands for some unknown, and you get an equation based on what information is given in the problem.

Know what infomation is given, and which you have to solve for

Remember that the information given in the word problem has something to do with how you can get the solution. At this point, it is a useful habit to draw illustrations which can help you imagine the situation better. Focus next on the unknown and try to see how the information given can help you find the unknown.

The importance of logical reasoning

Based on what is given and asked for in an math word problem, you must be able to connect all the information together and web them into one whole. There are math word problems which are very common. If you have been solving many of them, you can see how these word problems repeat itself. If you get the right reasoning flow, there is no reason not to get it right the next time.

Recognize key words

Math word problems are made of keywords. These keywords are crucial. If you encounter words like “twice that of” for example, it simply means 2x, assuming x is your variable. There are many other keywords which signify operations. Once you familiarize yourself with most of them, you will find it easy to convert the word problem into an actual math equation to solve.

Mathematics is simply a more organized methodology for solving some of the ordinary word problems we encounter everyday. It has not been invented out of the blue to make things more miserable for students.

If you are going through the “I can’t do math word problems syndrome,” maybe now is the right time to change that. Add in a little critical thinking and some positive energy, you will surely get the next math word problem right.

Anyone who has ever tried to translate between two different languages will understand the problems associated with language translation. These problems have been bugging translators for years. It is not easy to capture the same meaning when translating between two completely different languages.

Language is a communication tool. It can be used in many different ways to express either the same idea, or a completely different idea. The problem arises when translators attempt to translate word for word. This can be disastrous because the context in which the words are used is not taken into consideration. For example, in the English language, the word “market” can mean the stock market, or the fish market. Simply translating the word market to another language without taking into account the context can change the original meaning completely.

Therefore, the human mind is till required to do a translation job well. But the entire translation process can be very time consuming because this means the translator has to read the entire text and rewrite everything in a different language. Some translators have turned to technology for help. They use software to help with the translation.

Unfortunately, most translation software in the market today cannot accurately obtain the semantic meaning of a sentence. So the software has to resort to word for word replacement. And as we have just mentioned above, word for word replacement does not work for translation services. The translator is better off without the software. Here is when another problem arises.

What happens if a translator fails to understand the meaning of the original text?

This can happen because of cross cultural differences. For example, the word “dude” is used as a friendly term between buddies. There may be no equivalent of the same word in another language. So the translator is faced with this problem: What is another word that can be used to express the same meaning? Sometimes, there is a close substitute. Other times, the translator is not so lucky and has to settle for a word that has a totally different meaning. This depends on the language.

In today’s high tech world, the best software translation services are offered by the search engines. However, the technology is only meant to translate to a level where the reader can still make out what the passages of text are trying to say. Search engines continue to use such software because it is their role to find and deliver content to the end user in the quickest possible manner.

However, the output generated by such software is still far from decent. The reader has to make smart guesses just to make out what the translated text is trying to say.

In view of the above, if you are looking to translate one language to another for publishing purposes, you have to rely on skilled human translators. This is because, to date, there is no technology available that is powerful enough to replace the human mind’s ability to see and understand things in context. That is one up for the human mind against technology.
